Mac dictation keeps stopping? Causes and fixes

If Mac dictation keeps stopping, the most common reason is by design: Apple Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds, so a long pause to think ends the session. Other causes are a microphone that is too quiet, covered or not the one selected, a missing internet connection for some setups, and Voice Control being turned on.

Why Apple Dictation stops

According to Apple's Dictation guide for Mac:

  • Silence. Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds.
  • Not length. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout.
  • Voice Control. When Voice Control is on, you dictate through Voice Control and standard macOS Dictation is not available.
  • Microphone source. Keyboard settings show which microphone Dictation listens to. On Automatic, your Mac picks the device you are most likely to use, which may not be the one you are speaking into.

Apple's troubleshooting page, If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected, adds that you may need an internet connection, and that Keyboard settings show whether your dictation is processed on your device or sent to Siri servers.

Fixes Apple suggests

From the same Apple troubleshooting page:

  1. Make sure Dictation is turned on in Keyboard settings.
  2. Choose the correct language and region.
  3. Use the correct Dictation keyboard shortcut.
  4. If you use an external microphone, make sure it is connected and selected in Sound or Keyboard settings, with enough input volume.
  5. Keep the microphone uncovered, speak clearly and avoid background noise; in a noisy or echoey room, a headset microphone may help.
  6. Check your internet connection.

If your sessions end because you pause for more than 30 seconds, none of these will change that. The silence rule is how Apple Dictation works. The comparison of both approaches is in YappYapp vs Apple Dictation.

How a press-to-talk app behaves instead

YappYapp works differently: you press option+space to start and press it again to stop (or hold the keys down, if you pick Hold in Setup > Dictation). Being quiet does not end the recording. It stops when you stop it, or at the limit in Setup > Microphone > STOP AUTOMATICALLY AFTER: 5 minutes by default, adjustable from 30 seconds to 15 minutes, with a countdown in the last 10 seconds.

Transcription runs on your Mac with a downloaded model, so a dropped Wi-Fi connection does not interrupt it. See the offline dictation guide for the details.

When something outside your control ends a recording early, YappYapp transcribes what it caught and tells you why:

  • "Mic went silent for 2 seconds." The microphone stopped delivering audio at all (a stalled Bluetooth headset, for example). Your own pauses do not trigger it.
  • "Mic changed." The input device changed during the recording.
  • "Your Mac is going to sleep." The Mac went to sleep mid-recording.
  • "The mic heard only silence." The recording contained nothing but silence, usually the wrong microphone.

Checklist when YappYapp does not hear you or does not paste

YappYapp's setup checklist shows most of them with a one-click fix.

1. Microphone permission

YappYapp needs Microphone access. If it was refused, the checklist says the mic is blocked and offers OPEN. The setting is in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, as described in Apple's microphone access guide.

2. Accessibility permission for pasting

Automatic paste needs Accessibility access. Without it, YappYapp keeps the transcript on the clipboard for you to paste. Turn it on in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility (Apple's guide). If macOS still remembers an older YappYapp, the checklist says so: click ALLOW, and if that does not work, remove YappYapp from the Accessibility list and add it again.

3. The right input device

In Setup > Microphone, pick the mic you speak into instead of the Mac default. If the picked mic is unplugged, YappYapp falls back to the Mac default and the picker says MIC DISCONNECTED · USING DEFAULT.

4. Run the mic check

Right below the picker, the 6-SECOND MIC TEST listens without saving or transcribing anything and gives a verdict: NOTHING HEARD (pick another mic), TOO QUIET (turn on Quiet Voice Boost), GOOD, or VERY LOUD (move back or turn the mic down). Quiet Voice Boost is on by default and helps when you dictate at a low voice.

5. Read the paste result

The MIC tab names the outcome of every dictation: PASTED, PASTED? (⌘V was sent but could not be confirmed), COPIED, or NOT PASTED with the reason. Your text stays in HISTORY (the last 10 transcripts, in memory only), and the Paste Last shortcut pastes the most recent one again.

6. Password fields and secure input

YappYapp never types into password fields or while secure input is on, and names the app holding secure input when it can. A common cause in a terminal is Secure Keyboard Entry in Terminal; turn it off when you want to dictate there.

7. Shortcut and model

If option+space does nothing, another app may use the same keys: change the shortcut in Setup > Dictation. If the checklist says "No voice model yet", download the recommended model or pick one on the MODELS tab.

8. Ask for help with a support report

In Setup > Help, COPY REPORT copies a report with versions, model and settings only (no audio, transcripts or words); the same section lists recent crash reports. Attach it to an issue on the YappYapp GitHub repository. If you build from source, ./scripts/doctor.sh checks permissions, models and the runtime from the terminal.

Getting started

Download YappYapp (free, Apple Silicon, macOS 14 or newer) and follow the setup guide; it walks through both permissions and a test dictation.

FAQ

Can I make Apple Dictation wait longer than 30 seconds?

Apple's guide describes the 30-second silence stop and does not mention a setting to change it. Start Dictation again with your shortcut when it ends.

Does YappYapp stop when I pause?

No. A pause does not end a YappYapp recording. It stops when you press the shortcut again, release it in Hold mode, or reach the STOP AUTOMATICALLY AFTER limit.

Why does YappYapp copy instead of paste?

Usually because Accessibility permission is missing or stale, no editable field had focus, or auto-paste is turned off. The MIC tab gives the reason for each dictation.
